St. Croix Trailers Safety Operating Instructions
Your Safety is Our Priority
At St. Croix Trailers, we’re committed to providing you with a safe and reliable trailer. Please read and follow these instructions carefully to ensure a secure towing experience.
Major Hazards
Loss of control can lead to severe injury or death. Common causes include:
- Improper Trailer/Tow Vehicle Sizing:
- Ensure your tow vehicle can safely handle the trailer’s weight.
- Trailers exceeding 40% of the tow vehicle’s weight or 3,000 lbs require brakes (we can install these for you).
- Excessive Speed:
- The maximum recommended towing speed is 55 mph.
- Adjust your speed to road and weather conditions.
- Unadjusted Driving:
- Towing a trailer affects acceleration, stopping distance, and turning radius.
- Allow extra space and time for maneuvers.
- Overloading & Improper Weight Distribution:
- Exceeding weight limits or unevenly distributing the load can cause instability and tire/structural failure.
- Adhere to the trailer’s weight capacity and distribute the load evenly.
- Improper Coupling:
- Securely attach the trailer to the tow ball and use safety chains.
- Double-check the connection before each tow.
- Neglecting Tire Maintenance:
- Maintain proper tire pressure and check lug nuts regularly.
- Replace worn or damaged tires immediately.
Safe Towing Practices
- Adjust Driving for Conditions:
- Reduce speed in slippery conditions, rain, or snow.
- Be aware of the trailer’s height, especially when approaching bridges or low clearances.
- Check Mirrors Frequently:
- Monitor the trailer and surrounding traffic.
- Be aware of blind spots.
- Use Lower Gears on Downhills:
- Avoid riding the brakes, which can overheat and become ineffective.
- Use engine braking to control speed.
- Secure Cargo:
- Prevent shifting during transport by using straps, tie-downs, or other securing methods.
- Close and lock all doors and windows.
- Carry Appropriate Cargo:
- Don’t overload the trailer or transport hazardous materials.
- Ensure the cargo is suitable for the trailer type.
Before Entering the Trailer
- Secure the Trailer:
- Engage the jockey wheel and lower all stabilizing legs/stands.
- Use Brakes or Wheel Stoppers:
- Prevent unintended movement while parked.
